Choosing a Singapore Preschool: Key Checks

The early years are crucial for building a foundation for lifelong learning. Here’s a guide for Korean parents in Singapore on how to choose the right preschool for your child.

Types of Preschools in Singapore

Preschools in Singapore are regulated and licensed by the ECDA (Early Childhood Development Agency). These centres provide childcare and education services for children aged 2 months to under 7 years. They generally fall into three main categories:

  • Infant Care Centre

    • Age Group: 2 months to 18 months
    • Hours: 7 AM to 7 PM (full-day). Half-day or flexible hours are also available (minimum 12 hours/week, minimum 3 hours/session).
    • Operation: 5 or 5.5 days a week (excluding Sundays and public holidays).
  • Child Care Centre

    • Age Group: 18 months to under 7 years
    • Hours: 7 AM to 7 PM (full-day). Similar to infant care, half-day or flexible hours are available.
    • Operation: 5 or 5.5 days a week (excluding Sundays and public holidays).
  • Kindergarten

    • Age Group: 18 months to under 7 years
    • Hours: Primarily half-day sessions.
    • Operation: 5 days a week (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and school holidays based on the Ministry of Education's calendar). Note: International curriculum kindergartens may have different schedules.

Essential Checks When Choosing a Preschool

1. Educational Programmes & Curriculum

Each preschool has its own educational philosophy and approach. It’s vital to assess if the programme aligns with your child’s temperament and developmental stage. Look closely at the preschool’s educational philosophy, curriculum, and any special activities offered.

2. Teacher Qualifications & Interaction

Children learn and grow best with supportive teachers. Check the teachers' experience, qualifications, and the staff-child ratio. Observing how teachers interact with the children is also a great way to gauge the environment.

3. Child Safety is Paramount!

A safe environment is non-negotiable. ECDA enforces strict safety regulations and facility standards. However, it’s wise to confirm their emergency contact procedures and response plans. Feel free to inquire about CCTV installation and parent access policies.

4. Meal Provisions

Whether it's a full-day or half-day programme, the meals provided should be nutritious and balanced. If your child has food allergies or dietary restrictions, discuss this with the preschool beforehand to ensure their needs are met.

5. Registration & Fees

Policies regarding admission, withdrawal, and fees vary by centre. These details are usually outlined in the preschool's handbook or registration documents. Read the Terms and Conditions carefully before signing and clarify any doubts to avoid misunderstandings.

How to Find a Preschool in Singapore

The LifeSG app, operated by the Singapore government, offers a convenient way to search for preschools. Look for 'Search for a preschool' under the 'Services' tab. You can also find more information on preschools under the Anchor Operator (AOP) or Partner Operator (POP) schemes via the relevant links.
